On Sunday 10th June 2007 the UAE’s first breast cancer survivors team took Penang by storm and paddled into history by bringing the first silver medals back to the UAE for the sport of dragon boating. The multi-national team of ten paddlers, steered by Julie Amer and headed by Dr Houriya Kazim raced against the top teams in Asia/ Australia and took a very respectable 2nd place – just 11secs behind the current world champions (Australia) over a race distance of 500m on the Teluk Bahang Dam in Penang.
Thanks to superb coaching from Gray Mculloch, great training facilities at Le Meridien Mina Seyahi, the use of Dragon Boats and paddles provided by Dragon Boats Alive UAE and the support of sponsors the team were able to pull together and take part in their first overseas competition after just seven weeks of training.
Sights are now set on Gold!
Any breast cancer survivors keen to join in on the action and become part of the Tickled Pink Team should contact Julie on jules@mountainhighme.com or +971(50) 659 5536 for more details

The Breast Cancer Foundation of the Emirates
Breast cancer is a highly complex disease and there is not and
will not be a single, simple solution. Our mission is to save
lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer, to fund screening
programs, and to offer support for breast cancer patients and
their families by removing such barriers as limited or no health
insurance, lack of transportation and childcare or language and
cultural differences. Further, we aim to fund and facilitate research
into breast cancer epidemiology in the region.
Our Objectives:
Awareness and education programmes:
| • |
Offer print and audiovisual materials
for distribution on breast self-examination and screening
in a multitude of languages. |
| |
|
| • |
A month-long Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign
every October. |
| |
|
| • |
Informal talks at ladies clubs, associations,
schools, tertiary institutions, hospitals, private corporations
and government organisations. Topics to include an overview
of breast cancer, the importance of early detection, how
to conduct breast self-examination and perhaps a survivor
sharing her experience. |
| |
|
| • |
Provide comprehensive and dynamic breast
cancer resources through a website giving women breast-care
information and the tools they need following a breast cancer
diagnosis. |
| |
|
| • |
Ad hoc activities whenever opportunities
arise and where appropriate, work closely with the media
to reach out to the masses, including poster campaigns and
messages on taxi tops and bus shelters as well as information
capsules on the radio. |
Community outreach programs:
| • |
Fund and operate a mobile breast
cancer screening service (van or bus) made possible through
corporate sponsorship. The service would bring mammography
screening to the heartlands, companies and associations,
making it easily accessible. |
| |
|
| • |
Fund a National Breast Care Helpline that
is answered by trained and caring volunteers and staff,
to provide timely and accurate information to anyone with
breast health and breast cancer concerns, including breast
cancer patients and their family and friends. The Helpline
will not provide medical advice, make referrals to physicians,
or evaluate physicians, medical facilities or services. |
Breast screening services:
| • |
Regular free clinical breast
examination camps. |
| |
|
| • |
Subsidise screening mammograms for women
from low-income families |
Treatment services:
| • |
Give facts about the disease
and treatment options to assist in a way that motivates
thoughtful, confident action. |
| |
|
| • |
Provide information about community resources
and support groups. |
Supporting services:
| • |
Support
for the newly diagnosed patient, the survivor walking on
the road to recovery, and
the affected family members through our support group (“Brest
Friends”), volunteer counselling by women who have
survived breast cancer and through positive appearance. |
| |
|
| • |
Arrangement for transportation to Al Ain
for radiotherapy for those who do not have access to this. |
Breast Cancer Registry Project:
| • |
To estimate the overall breast
cancer burden in the UAE. |
| |
|
| • |
To identify any unusual breast cancer patterns. |
| |
|
| • |
To provide an evidence base for an Emirati
health promotion framework for a breast health message for
all women and for all health care professionals. |
| |
|
| • |
To enable the development of breast cancer
control strategies and programmes. |
Research Projects:
| • |
Fund and facilitate breast cancer
research in the region. |
| |
|
| • |
Fund researchers by way of study grants and
travel fellowships, employing data collectors etc.
